7 Brain Foods You Didn't Know You Needed

Your brain is the command center for your entire body. Not only does it help you think, but it keeps you breathing and also controls other major functions in your body, like heart function and the way you do everyday things like move around and feel; emotionally and physically. The foods that we put in our bodies play a major role in how our brains operate. Here are some tasty foods you can add to your diet to make sure that your brain is being fed for optimal focus and function.

Alpinia Galanga (Nootropic)

Alpinia galanga is a root from the ginger family that is a natural nootropic. What is a nootropic and why would you want to consume them, you might be wondering? A nootropic can be a natural or synthetic ingredient that is known to assist with focus, memory, and cognitive function. Alpinia galanga, specifically, has been studied for its positive effects on mental alertness and sustained attention. Studies show that when combined with caffeine, this nootropic's benefits can be even more powerful. If sustained attention span and focus are high on your list of priorities, combining your daily cup of caffeine with Alpinia galanga might be just the thing you're brain is seeking. VitaCup's Lightning Blend coffee is a rich tasting dark roast brew that's already infused with this focus-enhancing nootropic.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Fabulous food for thought number 1; brain food lions mane mushroom.

These strange-looking mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for nearly five centuries and have been said to support brain health, alleviate the symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and can boost mood and focus. Most of these benefits come from the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the Lion's Mane; which is why it's such a powerful ingredient.

Fatty Fish

Fabulous food for thought number 2; brain food fatty fish like salmon.

Over half of your brain is made of fat and over half of the fat in your brain is made up of Omega-3 which is found in fatty fish. Omega-3 is a huge building block for your mind. Examples of oily fish would be salmon, trout, and sardines. Omega-3 helps with mood improvement and memory. There was a study done, and results showed that people who consume some fatty fish weekly, had more gray matter in their brain which helps with muscle control, and sensory perception such as seeing and hearing, memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and self-control.

Berries

Fabulous food for thought number 3; brain food berries like strawberries and blueberries.

Not only are berries a delicious sweet treat, but they are also insanely good for you brain health! Berries have a lot of positive effects on your brain like communication between cells, reducing inflammation throughout your body and reducing or delaying age-related neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. They are also great for stress relief.

MCT Oil

MCT infused coffee

MCT oil, or medium-chain triglycerides, are made from either coconut or palm oil and can serve as an amazing source of energy and fuel for your brain. Those on the ketogenic diet, specifically, can get immense benefit from consuming MCT oil, as their bodies are in a state of "ketosis" (i.e. a process where the body burns stored fat for energy). Because these MCT's are easily absorbed by the body, it makes them an easy source of energy and fuel for your brain. One of the easiest ways to consumer MCT oil is by adding it to your coffee - there are many keto coffee recipes you can follow to add to the effects that caffeine has on your brain. VitaCup's Genius Blend coffee and Genius Blend tea are infused with MCT oil to boost energy and focus, without having to follow a recipe.

Nuts

Fabulous food for thought number 5; brain food nuts like cashews, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts.

Nuts are an excellent source for Vitamin E which helps keeps our immune system strong from bacteria and infections. Walnuts, in particular, are the best choice in nut as it has the most Vitamin E in it. This vitamin is also helping reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other memory loss.

Avocados

Fabulous food for thought number 6; brain food avocado.

Avocados are just as good as berries when it comes to supporting brain health. They do contain fat, but it’s the good kind of fat that does not lead to increased rates of high cholesterol or heart disease. Avocados are great for blood flow which is extremely important when it comes to your brain. These super fruits are high in potassium which is great to lower blood pressure and help with menstrual cramps.
